The Internet is filled with free cover letter samples. Just do a search and you’ll find hundreds of them. However, the biggest mistake job-seekers make is copying a sample word-for-word and sending if off. Cover letters are your chance to sell yourself to the company you’re applying to, so make sure you do it by customizing the sample with the secrets below.

Secret #1

When searching for free cover letter samples, many job-seekers will do an Internet search that is generic, such as “cover letter samples”. However, the secret to finding a sample that fits with your occupation is to customize your search more by searching for the type of position you are applying for. For example, if you are in marketing you might try the search “marketing cover letter samples”.

Secret #2

Once you find a sample that fits your occupation, you aren’t done yet. You still need to customize it for the specific job you are seeking and for your skills. Open the first paragraph with a general statement about the job and how your skills make you a good fit. Be brief, as you can go into more detail in the body of the letter.

In the second and possibly third paragraphs, go into more detail about your skills and accomplishments. Relate them to the job by reviewing the job description and pulling out the relevant skills needed.

Secret #3

So now your cover letter is customized to your occupation, the position you’re applying for and your skills. Think you’re done? Not quite yet. To make yourself stand out from the other applicants, customize it with facts about the company to which you are applying.

For example, if the company is a leader in telecommunications, you could say things like “I’m excited about the possibility of working for a leading telecommunications provider such as XYZ company and look forward to hearing from you soon”. The deeper the facts the better – look for things on the company’s website such as branding/slogans and past successes that you can incorporate.

So as you see, free cover letter samples aren’t always free of custom work. Make sure to customize your cover letter to stand out from the crowd and you’ll land your dream job soon than you think.
